iPhone 5 Will Support Both GSM And CDMA Bands

Here is yet another interesting rumor regarding the next generation iPhone 5. It is heard that the new device will carry support for both GSM and CDMA networks in a single handset. This means that the users will be able to switch impeccably between the two wireless network technologies.

Till a year back, Apple only manufactured a GSM-capable iPhone, as it was the only technology supported by Apple. This year Apple released a CDMA iPhone when it announced it would support Verizon. Despite having similar appearance, the CDMA and the GSM iPhones are actually entirely different devices built in different places. So now Apple has come up with the idea of building both GSM and CDMA in one phone.
The crossbreed iPhone that is expected to hit the market will include the hardware necessary to run on both CDMA networks, such as Verizon, and GSM networks, such as AT&T, allowing users to switch between those haulers, without having to replace the hardware. This change would make the iPhone the perfect travel smart phone, allowing it to work with practically any phone carrier in the world.

This is actually great news for users living in countries with CDMA carriers who frequently travel abroad. With this upcoming technology, they won’t need to carry along a separate GSM handset ever again but can easily switch networks when in different location. Well if Apple does manage to build both the bands in one device then it would truly be a ‘universal phone’.via: iPhone5hacks

Android-running HTC Vigor and Bliss pics and specs leak

Pics and specifications of two new HTC Android smartphones leaked today. We've got the powerhouse Vigor and the cute little Bliss designed to be a woman's best friend.
The HTC Vigor's name was leaked previously through an image taken with its camera and a benchmark score. But today we have much more information thanks to a Dutch online retailer - the first photo of the smartphone itself and a large portion of its specs sheet were brought to light.

As it was previously rumored, the HTC Vigor is going to utilize a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor and a 4.3-inch 720p display. There will also be an 8 megapixel snapper at the back that will be doing 1080p video recording. The Vigor will be the first handset in the HTC Beats lineup (backed up with Beats by Dr Dre sound innovations) and is going to run on the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread skinned with the latest HTC Sense 3.5 UI .
There is nothing on the availability just yet, but we suppose the upcoming holiday season is the best we can hope for.
Now let's talk about the HTC Bliss. It is a long rumored smartphone that HTC is preparing with the ladies' needs in mind. It should be a small, cute device running on a single-core 800MHz processor (Qualcomm MSM7x30 chipset with Adreno 205 GPU) and probably featuring a 3.something-inch display and a mid-range camera (5 megapixel or so).

As you can see, the HTC lady phone looks much like the Wildfire S. As rumor has it, the Bliss will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the latest HTC Sense 3.5 UI on top of that. The Bliss has already passed through the FCC in the USA so it might be quite close to becoming available.
HTC Bliss might be a mid-range smartphone, but one of its key features should be the rich accessory set available for it - a tabletop dock, Bluetooth audio equipment and a charm that lights up for different notifications.

Apple iPad 3 coming in early 2012, iPhone 5 expected in October

When's the iPhone 5 release date? Is there an iPad 3 coming out soon?
Apple fans are foaming at the mouth over the latest report from The Wall Street Journal that the
company has ordered parts from its assembler in Asia to begin production on its next-generation
iPad in October.

People "familiar with the matter" say the new iPad 3 will come out in early 2012 with as many as
1.5 million devices available at launch.
The new iPad is expected to have a higher resolution display -- 2048 x 1536 pixels -- twice that
of the iPad 2's 1024 x 768 pixel screen. Further, suppliers told The Wall Street Journal that
Apple has orders for a 9.7-inch screen, slightly larger than the previous iPads' 9.5-inch
display.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the iPad 3 "retina display" will be similar to the iPhone 4,
which shows images at 326 dpi (dots per inch). Any dpi of 300 or greater is said to be so dense
that pixels are indistinguishable to the human eye at a distance of 10 to 12 inches.
Apple intends to stay ahead of competitors from Motorola, Samsung and Toshiba -- who all use
Google's Android software -- by launching its next tablet computer as soon as possible. HP
killed its TouchPad on Thursday, just weeks after it was on sale, Forbes reports. Apple may have
nothing to worry about, though, as the company reported record sales of 9.3 million iPad units
in the fiscal quarter ending June 25, with a net profit of $7.31 billion over the period.
Meanwhile, smartphone geeks are buzzing over rumors that the iPhone 5 will finally come out this
October, after previous reports suggested it would be out as early as June.
SlashGear reports a VP at AT&T told its staff to "expect things to get really, really busy in
the next 35-50 days, so prepare your teams accordingly." Sources also said pre-orders for the
iPhone 5 would likely start at the end of September.
Such preparations by AT&T (and now Verizon) have become standard practice before an iPhone
launch.
Speculation for the iPhone 5 suggests the new Apple smartphone will have a dual GSM/CDMA chip
that works on both Verizon and AT&T networks. Verizon's iPhone 4, unlike the AT&T version, using
a CDMA chip that restricts multi-tasking and does not work with 4G networks like Verizon's new
LTE coverage.
The new iPhone is also expected to have an improved antenna (no more "deathgrip" issues) design,
better camera, bigger screen, thinner model, a faster processor, and possibly a NFC chip that
works with payment terminals in stores and restaurants like credit cards.
What do you think? If the iPhone 5 or the iPad 3 come out soon, will you get one?

Must-have BlackBerry apps for Ramadan

From verses from the Holy Quran to calculating Zakat during the fasting month, these applications are just the picks

Tech savvy BlackBerry owners can now use the popular Research in Motion device to good use during the holy month of Ramadan.
From call to prayers, to recitations of the holy Quran and calculations of the Zakat or charity during the auspicious month, we have found free BlackBerry applications that will make this Ramadan pass with a little more ease.
Pity we can’t do anything about the weather, but here’s our top six picks:
Call to Pray
One of the most top-rated BlackBerry downloads, as stated by fans, the Call to Pray application provides a superb package for all Muslims to utilise in their daily lives.
Comprising four apps in one, Call to Pray, as the name suggests, provides you with prayers timings, based on your selected country and city or based on your current location using GPS.
You also have the availability to select the Adhans sound, you like.
The application also shows you the direction of the Qibla for your selected country and city or from your current location using GPS.
A very useful add-on is its provision to astound you with morning and evening Azkar or prayers in the name of Allah, with the ability to listen to the audio of any Zekr or verses from the holy Quran.
The last function in the app is the addition of the Hijri or Islamic calendar, along with the Gregorian calendar and the ability to switch between them.
File size: 3.7MB

Zakah (Zakat) Calculator
Produced by ASGATech, the self-explanatory app name facilitates Muslims to calculate their Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, which comprises giving a fixed portion of one’s wealth to charity.
The easy-to-use application asks you to type the amount of money income, and the value of assets such as silver, gold, etc that you possess.
The rest is up to the app itself, which number crunches the percentage you should donate to charity within seconds.
The app also provides you with all information you need about Zakat, conditions of Zakat, spending channels, types of charity and Zakah Al-Fitr.
Moreover, you also get the latest conversion rates for all currencies such as the UAE dirham, the euro, American dollar, Egyptian pound and more.
File size: 2.9MB

Hadiths by Sahih Bukhari
Those of you who don’t carry around a book of Hadiths or the theories of Islamic law to understand the Holy Quran can download this app for better understanding.
Produced by ASGATech and narrated by Sahih Bukahri in Arabic, you can easily listen to the Hadiths by Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
The application also helps you search any Hadith by a single word or phrase, with instant results.
You also have the opportunity to add any Hadith to your list of favourites or share it with friends and family via Facebook, SMS or even e-mail.
The only drawback is, there is no English translation.
File size: 3.5MB
Quran Invocations
A heavy file at nearly 6MB, but is well worth the download during this month of Ramadan.
The app provides a vast collection of supplications or prayers from the Holy Quran at your fingertips.
All of the application content is searchable and you can select your favourites list or share it with your friends and family via social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. You can also SMS or e-mail verses.
Produced by ASGATech again, the only drawback for non-Arabic speakers is there is no English translation provided.
File size: 5.9MB
Mecca_BB
This Arabic application is a must for those who are planning their pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
This informative app works a virtual guidebook to all that the holy city has to offer, with an extensive directory of all the famous places, along with a phone directory, which includes numbers of police stations and hospitals should an emergency arise.
At a click, you also have access to food outlets in the area, with detailed maps for the city by category.
File size: 5.9MB
Emsakeya
If you are any thing like us, then fasting or not, when work piles up on the desk, you forget that time is running away from. This app does away with the disorganising and puts you back in order during the holy month.
Needless to say, it is the favourite app for the whole crew at 'Emirates 24|7', allowing you to set an alarm for prayers, iftar and souhour.
Word of caution though, some reviewers have complained about inaccuracy of timings in some countries around the world. Give it a go and let us know how it works in yours.

Samsung Galaxy S II Smartphone Review

Samsung's Galaxy S II was first introduced to the world at Mobile World Congress 2011, and despite the fact that quite a few smartphones have shipped in the months between then and now, Samsung's top-tier smartphone remains a favorite across the globe. In fact, it hasn't even shipped to America yet. With a potent dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 16GB of internal storage, a full gigabyte of RAM and the latest version of Android (2.3 aka Gingerbread), it stands as a powerhouse to compete with other top tier handsets.
There aren't any gimmicks here. No 3D. No qHD display, and no extra fancy design construction. What is here, however, is a powerful smartphone with a shockingly slim body, a lightweight design, true 1080p out via the micro-USB port and a subtle Android overlay (TouchWiz 4.0). And the 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus, while WVGA, is the display to beat in terms of image quality. What's interesting is how the Galaxy S II stands out in a sea of rivals.  There's never been more competition in the Android smartphone universe, and it really takes a lot to cut through at this point.

In addition to Android 2.3, Samsung includes the latest version of its TouchWiz user interface. It's a subtle overlay that isn't nearly as intrusive as Motorola's BLUR or HTC's Sense, and fans of stock Android will likely be pleased at the minor changes that are implemented.

Make no mistake: this phone is a high-end device aimed at those willing to pay top dollar for the best in performance. As of now, this phone isn't even offered by a U.S. carrier or retailer. The only way to acquire one is to have it imported; the Latin American build (i9100) supports AT&T's 3G bands, and that's the one to grab if you want to snag one right now in unlocked form. There's a build out there for T-Mobile bands as well; you just need to take caution to purchase the one with the frequency bands that fit your carrier. NewEgg and Negri Electronics both offer the phone, but at upwards of $650, it's an investment you should think long and hard about. That said, the unlocked phone will likely have a few design cues that'll set it apart from subsidized versions that should come to U.S. carriers within the month.
We'll discuss those, as well as our opinions on the overall performance and usability, in the pages to come. For now, let's take a look at the raw specifications breakdown:

BBC Launches Global iPlayer App for iPad in 11 Countries

The BBC has launched an app that brings the British network's TV shows to Apple iPads in 11 countries. Unfortunately, the U.S. isn't among the first round of countries to get the global iPlayer app, which brings a "curated" set of BBC content to iPad owners.
The iPlayer app is free, but to watch shows users will have to shell out €6.99s a month (about $10), or €49.99 (about $72) for a yearly subscription. The initial launch includes only countries in Western Europe: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. Plans are in place to bring the global iPlayer to the U.S., Canada, and Australia by the end of the year.
The global iPlayer has some differences from other iPad video apps like Hulu Plus or ABC's video player. Notably, it can stream shows over 3G connections as well as Wi-Fi, and users will be able to download and store shows for viewing while offline. The BBC is said to have worked closely with Apple to make this possible.
"When we were doing our user testing, the use case was picking six shows before going on a long journey, and leaving them to download to the iPad overnight," Mark Smith, the global iPlayer launch director at BBC Worldwide, told London's Guardian. "The way the [iPad] works, though, is it hibernates and stops you from doing that: you wake up the next morning and only half a show has downloaded. We have managed to override that functionality, and Apple are comfortable with us doing that."
Subscribers won't have access to the entirety of BBC's on-air offerings, however. BBC Worldwide is said to have hired a team of editors to "curate" the content on the iPlayer, picking which shows to put on the app. It also give them to go beyond the typical genre and title browsing by creating themed collections around subjects and events. For example, for the long-running sci-fi show Doctor Who, collections surrounding specific Doctors are available.
"This is not a catch-up service: this is a video-on-demand service," BBC.com managing director Luke Bradley-Jones said in the Guardian report. "We will have content from the last month, but also the best from the catalogue stretching back 50 to 60 years."
While the content at launch will be the same for all 11 countries, the BBC has the ability to tailor the content of the app to meet the different demands of each region. This will likely factor more highly in the introduction of the global iPlayer to the U.S., where licensing rights for TV shows can be more complicated. According to reports, once the BBC works out the rights issues, the iPlayer content shouldn't affect the company's offerings in iTunes, Hulu, and Netflix.
"We see the global BBC iPlayer very much as another 'Channel' operating in Western Europe," BBC spokesman Alex Fulton told PCMag. "By adopting windowing strategies for our content, we are able to ensure that our broadcast partners and Channels around the world are able to entertain their audiences with our shows."

Samsung Galaxy S 4G Offers Impressive Speed Performance

The Android 2.2-based mobile device will be offered by T-Mobile starting February 23. It will have the price tag of about $150. The handset will come with a two year contract. Although T-Mobile is technically not a 4G network, still it managed to show impressive speeds of up to 21 megabits per second.
The Galaxy S will be the first smartphone of T-Mobile that is supportive to up to 21 mbps. Due to such speed streaming video will work well on the handset. You will not face any issues when it comes to playing games. The Galaxy S 4G is powered by a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor that is enough to launch apps quickly as well as run smooth video.

The only downside buy medicine online without prescription of the handset is the Android 2.2 operating system. It remains unclear why Samsung is not offering the handset with the latest version of Google’s operating system, which has already proven stability to manufacturers.
One can also complain about the lack of an 8 MP camera as well as dual-core processor. But the real story is the chipset technology and HSPA+ radio in the handset. The mobile device can remind you the last year model that comes with this year’s wireless tech. It is not considered to be a bleeding edge handset, it is potentially fast.
The Galaxy S features a 5 MP camera that is found on the back as well as 1.3 megapixel camera located on the front which can allow you to make videoconferencing.
The mobile device is offered in the rounded corner design. It feels solid when you hold it in hands. The Galaxy S 4G is an impressive mobile device.

Motorola has announced a new mid-range Android smartphone that actually looks pretty dang sweet based on its specs. The Motorola XT531 is a 3.5 inch smartphone running Gingerbread 2.3, and will include some of the following specs:
  • 800MHz CPU
  • 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM
  • 5MP rear auto focus camera and front facing VGA camera
